Funnyman Actor Brian Morri recounts his experience of playing a heavy in Exposure:

I am a nice guy... I swear.

I have known Mia Trachinger for a long time now, and have worked with her on 3 films. I can without hesitation tell you that she is one of the sweetest, thoughtful, and most talented people out there. That said, what is her problem?! Why does she think I am so mean?

As all relationships start, it was wonderful first working with her years ago on an improv based film.  An incredible creative process, Mia and I worked so well together and so smoothly.  At that time, my character was a slightly insecure but lovable dolt in a film called, "Candy". Lovable guy...that's cool. After that, I think she snapped, because the relationship turned to a relation-shit for sure. I mean, epic Greek, snakes for hair type stuff.

For my role in "Bunny", I was cast as such a nasty slimy bottom feeder of a manager, who slowly ogled a woman in front of her husband. Really no redeeming quality.  Now I am well aware that it is acting and we embody characters who can be as drastically different than ourselves as night is to day, but I got a call from Mia a few weeks into shooting that went something like this:

RING....
"Hello?"
  "Hey Brian"
"Oh hey, Mia, how's filming going?"
"Really well, thanks."
"I am sure it is, you are awesome Mia and I think you are the best person in the whole entire world."
"Whatever. Thanks. Listen, Brian would you mind if we named your character, 'Mr.Morri'?"
"Uh...he's a pretty awful guy, Mia, and that is my own personal name, so I think..."
"Great because we accidentally have been using that name for a week of filming already and its too late do change it."
"Well, I guess..."
"Terrific, see ya putz."
  CLICK!...

Something like that I think.  The character "Mr. Morri" was born and people hated the guy.  So I started thinking, this guy is terrible... she named him after me... 2+2=... "What's her problem?!! I'm a nice guy, I swear."

As fate would have it, a couple years ago, I bumped into Mia on a random plane flight, while she was with her lovely family, and she sucked me back in to her evil kind world. Her and her family are all so sweet, or so it seems, because I again decide she's the kindest woman and I forgive all. My wounds have been licked and healed, she seems so nice again, and this year I get a call from Mia asking if I would play a paramedic / agent type. Paramedics help people... I am BACK! Yes. Nice good guy character? No. Short tempered, irritated, drug-injecting jerk.
Heeere we go again!

I swear I am nice. I think.
By the way, I can't wait for her to call me to play a real psychopath next.

Wed, 06 Apr 2011 10:17:00 -0700 Inspiration For Exposure http://exposurethemovie.com/inspiration-for-exposure http://exposurethemovie.com/inspiration-for-exposure

At the time ITVS asked me to submit an idea for a FUTURESTATES episode, news stories chronicling public fears of the H1-N1 vaccine were rippling across the media. Americans from across the political spectrum — from the left to the right — were skeptical about the government's motives for urging citizens to get the vaccine.

This hesitation made me wonder about our nation's comfort with scientific research and our latest medical advances. I began to feel that the more we advance in science and medicine, the more we're afraid of its power and the less we seem to trust it.

It seems our society is at a point where we view healthcare as both helpful and predatory.

In Exposure, I'm imagining a near future where the relationship between medicine/science and society has broken down even further.

Production Designer Aiyana Trotter describes her process of designing the Virus Infiltration System in Exposure:

Here's the original concept drawing for the Contagion ventilator.  It had to be revised when I realized that they were attached to a vent on the wall and we wanted the agents closer to the vent itself.

1_basementvent_drawing
These are my research boards of air pumps, ventilation masks.  Trying to figure out the look we wanted.

3
The Hunt: I spent many hours in hardware stores with my assistant Rafael Olavarrieta looking for the perfect parts to create the vents and masks.

5
We based the machine additionally off of vaccuum hoses, plastic plumbing parts, and vaccuform odds and ends provided to us by Marcelle Chamlee the costume designer.

The final test:  Once we solidified our location for the scene we had to tailor all the parts to look good for the shot. This photo is of Mia Trachinger doing a demo of the machine and vent before it was painted and finally assembled.

Mon, 04 Apr 2011 12:00:00 -0700 Fear is a lesson in history and perspective... http://exposurethemovie.com/fear-is-a-lesson-in-history-and-perspective http://exposurethemovie.com/fear-is-a-lesson-in-history-and-perspective

When I was asked to audition for EXPOSURE  I had a hair trigger reaction to the character of Roxanne as it pertained to the audition scene... someone who cared deeply about her job position, but who cared for the people and community she was instructed to inoculate. As actors we bring our whole selves to a project and with that experience comes cultural egocentricity; it is just part of who we are. I come from grandparents and parents who were raised in the segregated South. They were and are proud people who in the former generation feared the government and in the latter reaped benefits and became a part of it.

So the impression made by the character was personal and, in retrospect, I supposed it may have been one of the reasons that I was cast...

Roxanne is determined to complete the task of immunizing citizens against the virus and she is a woman on a mission, caring solely about the mission at hand.

From where I sat,  government had been an asset to community-. Being a child of the post Civil Rights Era, it afforded me opportunities, it employed my Dad and a number of my relatives, and my knowledge of all the things put in place to aid mothers and children who were underinsured and under privileged was expanse... surely the federal government would look out for its constituents, right?

Interestingly enough though, during my Grandparents' era, the US Public Health Service ran syphilis experiments on African American men in Alabama under the guise of free health care. No wonder, sometimes they were reluctant to see a doctor even though they were insured. So? These are the questions that swirled inside of me as the script unfolded and we embarked upon the shoot and it brought me a great deal of joy to pose the questions with Mia.

In the recent wake of the H1N1 vaccines that year, I hadn't a second thought about getting one, but I had a number of friends who questioned the necessity for it...what was the fear and so forth. As I spoke to people it became clear to me that history, culture and ethnicity informed a lot of the answers to individual questions. Where people lived...how they are treated by government officials, what results do they get when requesting aid, was asking for help ever an issue in their lives all had something to do with their decisions.

I am excited that the dialogue about our commonality and different feelings about our government will be raised when people see the film and moreover, intrigued by what new ideas the film will spark as a result.

After stressing the importance of safe sex, I started thinking more and more about STDs, the ones that have been around for centuries and the newer threats like HIV/AIDS. These mixed-media collages represent romantic couples where one or both participants have syphilis, Chlamydia, gonorrhea, etc. I provide the viewer with the names of the lovers and the disease, they provide the story."

final sequence.mov Watch on Posterous

When our shotlist for the building location was complete it had over eighty shots on it.  With two shooting days for several interior and exterior dialogue scenes and a chase sequence involving our main cast and crowds of extras, this wasn't going to be possible. We narrowed it down a bit before the shoot and we did get over seventy shots in the course of those two days-- thanks to an incredibly hardworking cast and crew.

Above is the storyboarded shot from the post below-- the way it looks in the final film.

Mia and I knew that the office building location was going to be very important in terms of the look of Exposure.  When the building with a strange layout and a lot of glass became an option, we both hesitated because it wasn't how we pictured that part of the film.  Pretty quickly, we did a complete turnaround and decided we needed that building.

Mia and I made several visits to the building to shotlist together.  Our storyboarding sessions consisted of running around with a DSLR shooting video and stills of Mia acting out the scenes.  Above is a shot of Mia simultaneously playing the roles of a crowd of office workers desperately running from government agents and a man being trampled by them.  It's one of my favorite shots in the finished film-- and one of my favorite storyboard videos.

I think it’s interesting to note that the resistance to immunization campaigns is nothing new….in fact it’s been going on for over a hundred years and birthed the term "conscientious objector." Read more below....

According to Deadly Choices: How the Anti-Vaccine Movement Threaten Us All, by Paul Offit...

"In 1898, the British government finally gave in (ed. to the anti-vaccine crusaders), appeasing angry citizens by passing a conscientious-objection law. People who didn't want to get a vaccine didn't have to. (The term "conscientious objector," born of England's anti-vaccine movement, was later applied to those who refused to fight in WWI and subsequent wars.)”

This provided working and lower-middle-class antivaccinationists a measure of relief from the repeated fines they had suffered for noncompliance with the law, and from the threat of imprisonment.

"Within a year, the government issued more than two hundred thousand certificates of conscientious objection. By the late 1890s, vaccination rates had plummeted. In Leicester 80 percent of babies were unvaccinated; in Bedforshire, 79 percent; in Northamptonshire, 50 percent; and in Derbyshire, 48 percent. Anti-vaccine forces in England had won the day. In Ireland and Scotland, on the other hand, no such movement existed. No anti-vaccine groups were formed, no anti-vaccine pamphlets were produced, and citizens readily accepted vaccination. While vaccination rates in England fell, those in Scotland and Ireland rose. As a result, England became Europe's epicenter of smallpox disease and death.

For anti-vaccine activists in England, the freedom to choose had become the freedom to die from that choice.“

Beyond the historical interest, I wonder what was going on in England that led to resistance to vaccination campaigns but not in Ireland or Scotland? Did it have to do with their citizens being accustomed to more freedoms than elsewhere in the UK?

Sun, 13 Mar 2011 22:34:00 -0700 The Casting Process, by Nicole Arbusto http://exposurethemovie.com/exposure-post http://exposurethemovie.com/exposure-post

Nicole_arbusto

Casting any film - short or feature always presents challenges specific to that particular project. For this project Mia was very open to seeing people she was not familiar with - she is very open in general to people regardless of their credits or length of resume, I found she really is just curious to see what actors bring to the project. She's very collaborative.

In the case of EXPOSURE she was interested in having a range of kinds of people to reflect the diversity of Los Angeles. There's a lot going on in the film and the action brings together 2 different worlds, Jesse's world and Roxanne's world. I think the people who populate each environment are what make that world real and vibrant for the audience.

JoNell Kennedy ( Roxanne ) is someone whose work I've known for a long time, and she's auditioned for me in the past. Once the idea of her in the role came to me, I felt really confident that she'd be ideal. Peyton McCormick ( Nicole ) is someone who I met recently and she's also new to Los Angeles so that was great to be able to bring her to this. And I think in general it's great to have a mix of people from different backgrounds and ranges of experience - it just makes for a more textured and vibrant world.

I've been interested in working with Mia for a few years, and we've kept in touch - I was thrilled to have the opportunity to work with her on EXPOSURE. It was a great coincidence that I had met Reuben Lim at a Film Independent event around the time HALF LIFE was screening at LAFF. It was just kismet that I got to work with 2 people I'd met separately and was excited to collaborate with, who happened to both be on this project.

The topics explored in the film were really compelling to me - I think fear in general is a great subject. Fear can be a powerful motivator and can also be something that paralyzes us. There are so many complex issues around health and intervention - and the speed with which things change in the field makes it almost impossible to have a static set of beliefs or rules. And of course all of us have things that in the abstract we would or would not do - but when faced with a health crisis of our own or a loved one those could change or shift dramatically.

(Sibpun Ampornpet)

Oftentimes for me, movie sets and productions get garbled with one another.  Some I can hardly even remember; but this isn't the case with Exposure.  Working on the film was a very enjoyable and memorable experience.  The relatively small cast and crew were friendly and personable from the very first moment I arrived on location and never did I see anybody being treated as if they had just fallen off the unwelcome wagon.  I also learned when I arrived that every background performer there was each hand selected and not just randomly picked out of a bag, which gave me a little boost of self esteem ... a nice little bonus.

Working on Exposure also provided me with the experience of working with Director Mia Trachinger.  Out of the numerous projects that I've been involved with, this film was the first I've seen under female direction.  Although I don't think standards should be any different for a male or female director, I must say that Mia's style of directing was very effective in integrating the entire production, from cast and crew to background.  She was very hands on, always taking into consideration the viewpoint of anybody who volunteered one.  Additionally, she always had a lighthearted demeanor about her which was highly infectious, even in the face of an extremely tight shooting schedule.

Looking back and considering my experience on Exposure, I wish more sets were like that one.  I had a memorable time, worked with extremely talented people on what is sure to be an incredible film.
