Post-Production Sound on Exposure, by William Tabanou

Doing the post sound design and mix for Exposure was challenging and rewarding due to what was involved sound-wise, and the quick turnaround we had to meet. We had to place many sound elements to make sure all of the locations and action sequences felt right to create the futuristic and tense nature of this film.
Placing the right sound effects to create an uneasy, and at times, jarring experience was paramount to get the point across. For instance, all the background effects that were mixed in the ventilation sequence needed to build dynamically and have an omnipresent feel, as though they were surrounding you and making you experience the fear of what was to unravel. As the virus mutates at the end of the film, Mia and I made sure there was enough chaos in the mix. Music, effects and chaotic crowd sounds ramping up and then abruptly ending. Basically, a quick roller coaster ride at the end of the film.
Along with the subject matter, I think the score fueled the overall uneasy and frantic mood of Exposure.
Every sound effect and music cue surrounding the dialog has its purpose and as a mixer it's always exciting to be able to play with all the elements.
It was great to work and exchange ideas with Mia during the whole process. She had a very concrete vision, yet was always open to suggestions that could amp up the sound design and mix of her film. I'm looking forward to the audience response after viewing this film.
